The balance spindle is made from brass and from steel, whose source is common sewing needles. Needles are very hard and highly polished, more so than one could achieve onself. They will run in jewels, which are actually pocket-watch center jewels. The needles are .035" in diameter, which is about .003" under the size of the jewel bore. This is a comfortable, loose fit appropriate for clocks.
The top of the spindle is a piece of 1/8" brass, which is drilled with a tiny .014" longitudinal hole for the supension spring. The spring is clamped by two gnat-like 0-80 set screws threaded in from opposite directions. This is a good, solid clamp -- the spring will break before they let go.
The bottom of the brass piece is drilled .035" to be fit onto the top needle. It is also held with a 0-80 set-screw. This permits disassembly for later slipping the needles into the jeweled bearings.
The jewels will be pressed into settings with a Seitz jewel press, at a later time.
